LAWS 361 - International Law

(3 cr.) This broad survey course examines public international law and the principles that determine to what extent this law is incorporated within the U.S. domestic legal system. We study a wide range of treaties and customary international law, as well as several of the major international institutions such as the United Nations that play a role in the international legal framework. We also consider to what extent international law operates as a rule of decision for our courts and as authority for or constraint on actions of the President, the Congress, and U.S. States.
