(3 cr.) This comprehensive survey of Greek tragedy pays special attention to tragic theory and to the evolution of classical drama from its birth in the cult of Dionysus to its culmination in fifth-century B.C. Athens. The extant plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles and selected plays by Euripides are examined with special emphasis on form. Prerequisite: EN 101 or EN 102; Every Year, Fall
