|(3 cr.) This course offers an intensive analysis of
elections and parties in the U.S. and other
nations. Special emphasis is placed on the
development of competitive political party
systems as vital to the success of democracy.
Topics include the history of elections and
campaigns, the role of gender, ethnicity and
class in modern political parties, voting
behavior, party strategies, campaign advertising,
fundraising, and media coverage of elections. The
course includes classroom visits by party leaders
and candidates, and requires students to
participate in direct observation as participants
in an election campaign.
