CER 445 - Advanced Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering
(3 cr.) This course focuses on the application of soil mechanics principles to the geotechnical design of foundation systems and earth retaining structures. Discussion topics include in-situ testing, subsurface investigations and soil sampling. The course focuses on design concepts, analysis methods and construction techniques for different types of shallow foundations, deep foundations and earth retaining structures. Students learn analytical techniques for calculating bearing capacity of footings, axial capacity of piles and foundation settlement. They also study lateral earth pressure theories, effects of on earth pressure and analysis methods for evaluating the external stability of retaining walls. Prerequisite: CER 340; Every Year, Spring
