EN 236 - (UC) The Idea of the West in the American Imagination
 
(3 cr.) This course examines the influence of the frontier and the westward movement on American literature, revealed in such writers as Cooper, Whitman, Mark Twain, Eleanor Stewart, Willa Cather, Faulkner, A.B. Guthrie, Larry McMurtry, Louise Erdrich, Ed Abbey, Sam Shepard, Rick Bass and Linda Hogan. The nature of myth and reality and of the American attitude as affected by the opportunity to mold a fresh society is explored. Prerequisite: EN 101 or EN 102; Every Other Year, Spring
