|(3 cr.) This course gives students a strong foundation in
the formal traditions of poetry in English from
blank verse to free verse. Students work closely
with Robert Pinsky's The Sounds
of Poetry to get a grasp of the basic, formal
principles of the art, the better to hear poems
and understand the ways in which they work.
Students explore a variety of poetic forms,
reading and discussing poems that exemplify these
forms and practicing their own poems based on
these models. For the final project of the
semester, students assemble a portfolio of
all their work, introduced by a reflective essay.
