Edward Alwood (Ph.D., University of North Carolina) is an emeritus professor of journalism. His research specialty concentrates on journalism history, particularly the early Cold War era of the 1940s and 1950s, and news of minorities. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on Communists in the press and received the prestigious Nafziger-White Dissertation Award from the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). His is the author of the 1996 book Straight News: Gays, Lesbians, and the News Media and the 2007 book Dark Days in the Newsroom: McCarthyism Aimed at the Press. Dark Days in the Newsroom won the prestigious Tankard Book Award from AEJMC. He worked for fourteen years as a news reporter at several television outlets, including the Washington bureau of CNN.
