State Supreme Court’s decision in teen’s chemotherapy case
John Thomas, a health law professor, is available to comment on today's state Supreme Court's decision that the state can force a 17-year-old Connecticut resident to undergo chemotherapy for her Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"This case presents the classic conflict among a state's interest in protecting the health and lives of its citizenry, a parent's right to make decisions about his or her child's health care treatment, and a mature, but still minor child's right to make her own decisions," Thomas said. "The Connecticut Supreme Court's decision places the state in the majority position in the United States, but leaves a complex and sensitive issue to the General Assembly for further consideration."
