June 1, 2009 - Yankees Bump Sox Out Of Top Spot In Connecticut, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds Word format The New York Yankees are back in first place in the hearts of Connecticut baseball fans, brushing back the Boston Red Sox to take a 42 - 38 percent lead, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This reverses a 41 - 40 percent Boston lead in a July 3, 2008, poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll, the first time the Red Sox slipped into first place since the question was asked in 2003. A total of 57 percent of Connecticut adults say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball. Among those fans, 42 percent list the Bronx Bombers as their favorite team, with 38 percent who list the Red Sox and 9 percent who cheer for the New York Mets. The Yankees do best, with 52 percent, in Fairfield County, while the Red Sox rule with 59 percent in Tolland, Windham and New London Counties. Hartford County goes 53 - 37 percent for the Sox while New Haven and Middlesex Counties go 48 - 31 percent for the Yankees. "The New York Yankees have reversed their slide and slipped back into first place in Connecticut, but Boston remains a contender," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, PhD. "Another World Series win could put the Sox back on top." From May 20 - 25, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,743 Connecticut adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.
