June 20, 2013 - Women Lift Yankees Over Red Sox In Quinnipiac University's Annual Connecticut Baseball Playoff PDF format The Connecticut governor's race might be too close to call, but the New York Yankees have a 42 - 37 percent lead over the Boston Red Sox in the hearts of fans in Quinnipiac University's annual Connecticut Baseball Poll. Only 8 percent of fans cheer for the New York Mets. A total of 52 percent of Connecticut adults are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Fans under 35 years old prefer the Yankees 50 - 36 percent, while older fans are more evenly divided between the two legendary rivals. There is a gender gap as women back the Bombers 48 - 35 percent while men are divided with 40 percent for the Sox and 37 percent for the Yankees. Fairfield County goes to the Yankees 55 - 15 percent, while Hartford County goes to the Sox 50 - 35 percent. Boston also rules 49 - 32 percent in Tolland, Windham and New London Counties. "The Red Sox may be leading the AL East, but the Yankees still lead in the hearts of Connecticut baseball fans," said Douglas Schwartz, PhD, director of the Quinnipiac University poll. "The Yankees benefit from their lead among young people and women. Unfortunately for Met fans they are still stuck in single digits. From June 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,341 Connecticut adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
