June 30, 2004 - New Governor Will Be Effective, Restore Trust, Connecticut Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Federal Probe Of Rowland Should Go On, Voters Say By a 76 - 4 percent margin, with 21 percent undecided, Connecticut voters believe incoming Gov. Jodi Rell will be able to govern effectively, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Even Democrats say 71 - 5 percent that she can govern effectively. By a 68 - 13 percent margin, voters tell the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll that Gov. Rell will be able to restore public trust in state government. When asked to name the incoming governor, 64 percent of voters said Rell, while 36 percent had no answer or a wrong answer. Voters give Rell a 34 -1 percent favorability rating, with 6 percent mixed and 59 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. "The poll results are good news for incoming governor Jodi Rell. Although most voters haven't heard enough about her to form an opinion, voters are overwhelmingly optimistic that she will be able to govern effectively and restore public trust in state government," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D. "Among those voters who have an opinion of her, it is overwhelmingly favorable. She has virtually no negatives, with only one percent having an unfavorable opinion of her. We've never seen such a low unfavorable number." The federal investigation into outgoing Gov. John Rowland should continue, Connecticut voters say 67 - 30 percent. Republicans say 55 - 41 percent the investigation should continue. Voters disapprove 66 - 27 percent of the job John Rowland did as Governor. Jodi Rell was not aware of the alleged corruption involving Rowland, voters say 46 - 35 percent, with 19 percent undecided. Her 10-year association with Rowland does not hurt her ability to be an effective governor, voters say 79 - 15 percent. "Jodi Rell comes into office unencumbered by Gov. Rowland's alleged wrongdoing, and voters want to give her a chance to straighten things out. Her 10 years as Governor Rowland's Lieutenant Governor has not hurt Rell. Nearly 8 in 10 say that her association with Rowland will not affect her ability to be an effective governor," Dr. Schwartz said. Only 24 percent of Connecticut voters could name Kevin Sullivan as the incoming Lieutenant Governor. Presidential Race Democratic challenger John Kerry has almost doubled his Connecticut lead over Republican President George W. Bush in less than a month. Sen. Kerry has a 50 - 32 percent lead over President Bush, with 9 percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader. This compares to a 46 - 36 percent Kerry lead, with 8 percent for Nader in a June 4 Quinnipiac University poll. From June 27 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 929 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and the nation as a public service and for research.
