August 19, 2004 - Connecticut Voters Give New Gov Huge Approval, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Kerry Leads Bush 45 - 38 Percent Connecticut voters give their new Governor, Jodi Rell, a huge 73 - 4 percent approval rating, among the highest ever measured in any state surveyed by the Quinnipiac University poll. Results are consistent among Democrats, Republicans and independent voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Gov. Rell gets a 60 - 2 percent favorability rating, with 12 percent mixed and 25 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Looking at the U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Christopher Dodd leads Republican challenger Jack Orchulli 64 - 20 percent. Sen. Dodd gets a 52 - 13 percent favorability, with 23 percent mixed and 11 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. For Orchulli, 81 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. "Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell has gone from relative obscurity, where 59 percent of voters did not know enough about her to form an opinion in a June 30 poll, to being a superstar with one of the highest job approval ratings recorded in 11 years of Quinnipiac University surveys, " said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D. "Part of this could just be relief that the ordeal with former Gov. John Rowland is over." In the presidential race, Democratic Sen. John Kerry leads Republican President George W. Bush 45 - 38 percent, with 6 percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader. This compares to a 50 - 32 percent Kerry lead, with 9 percent for Nader in a June 30 Quinnipiac University poll. Voters disapprove 52 - 42 percent of the job President Bush is doing, compared to a 58 - 37 percent disapproval June 30. "A very popular Republican Governor may be helping President Bush in Connecticut, just as anti-Rowland feelings may have hurt Bush in the June 30 poll. Nonetheless, Kerry is maintaining a lead as expected in Connecticut," Dr. Schwartz said. Going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do, Connecticut voters say 49 - 43 percent. Given four choices, 35 percent of Connecticut voters say the economy is the most important issue in the presidential campaign, followed by 24 percent who say terrorism, 19 percent who say Iraq and 17 percent who say health care. Looking at how the candidates would handle key issues, voters say: 53 - 39 percent that Kerry would do a better job handling the economy; 48 - 41 percent that Bush would do a better job on terrorism; 46 - 44 percent that Kerry would do a better job on Iraq; 56 - 31 percent that Kerry would do a better job on health care. By a 42 - 35 percent margin, Connecticut voters have an unfavorable opinion of Bush, with 20 percent mixed. Kerry gets a 37 - 26 percent favorability rating, with 29 percent mixed. Laura Bush gets a 58 - 10 percent favorability rating, with 15 percent mixed. Teresa Heinz Kerry gets a 27 - 23 percent favorability, with 20 percent mixed. From August 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,079 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and the nation as a public service and for research.
