May 2, 2006 - Rell Flying High In Connecticut Gov Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Anti-Bush, Anti-War Feeling Does Not Hurt Lieberman Six months before election day, Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell has a 77 - 11 percent approval rating and leads either of her two largely unknown Democratic challengers by margins of better than 3 - 1, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Gov. Rell had an 81 - 9 percent approval rating in a February 16 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Rell buries two possible Democratic challengers: 66 - 20 percent over New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, compared to 70 - 16 percent February 16; 65 - 20 percent over Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, compared to 70 - 15 percent. By a 64 - 6 percent margin, voters have a favorable opinion of Rell, with 19 percent mixed and 10 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Her challengers are relatively unknown: 60 percent don't have an opinion about DeStefano and 81 percent don't know enough about Malloy. "The clock is ticking and Gov. Jodi Rell's Democratic challengers have made little or no headway in telling voters who they are and why they should replace a very popular Governor," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D. "If Gov. Rell has an Achilles heel, the Democrats have not found it. Perhaps this race will tighten up, once the Democrats can rally around a single challenger." DeStefano tops Malloy 32 - 24 percent among Democrats, with 38 percent undecided. Connecticut voters tilt to the pro-choice side in the abortion debate: 31 percent say abortion should be legal in all cases; 38 percent say abortion should be legal in most cases; 16 percent say abortion should be illegal in most cases; 9 percent say abortion should be illegal in all cases. By a 78 - 17 percent margin, including 74 percent of Catholics, voters would support a law requiring all Connecticut hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims. U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman gets a 59 - 29 percent approval, compared to 63 - 25 percent February 16. In a possible Democratic primary, the incumbent beats businessman Ned Lamont 65 - 19 percent, with most Lamont supporters saying they are voting against Lieberman. Running as an independent, Lieberman has 56 or 57 percent in possible three-way races, with Lamont challenging him on the Democratic line and either former State Rep. Alan Schlesinger or businessman Paul Streitz running on the Republican line. Most Connecticut voters, 57 percent, know Lieberman supports the war in Iraq, but only 15 percent would vote against a candidate based only on his position on the war. Connecticut voters disapprove 71 - 25 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing and say 61 - 34 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do. Disapproval of President Bush is high in all Congressional districts. The U.S. should pull all its troops out of Iraq, 33 percent of voters say, with 28 percent who say reduce the number of troops; 14 percent who say increase the number of troops and 18 percent who say keep the troop levels the same. "President Bush is at a new low among Connecticut voters, but this attitude about the President and the war does not seem to affect Sen. Lieberman," Dr. Schwartz said. From April 25 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,536 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The survey includes 528 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and the nation as a public service and for research.
