October 31, 2007 - Treat For Giuliani As He Inches Ahead Of Clinton, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Trick For Clinton As She Drops Overall Word format Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, the Republican front-runner, leads New York Sen. Hillary Clinton by a razor-thin 45 - 43 percent, but voters say 58 - 37 percent that President George W. Bush's low approval ratings will make it difficult for any Republican to be elected President, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Giuliani's lead reverses a 46 - 43 percent Sen. Clinton lead in an August 15 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, but Giuliani was up 49 - 40 percent May 3. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama gets 43 percent to Giuliani's 42 percent. And Arizona Sen. John McCain ties Clinton 44 - 44 percent, wiping out a 47 - 41 percent Clinton lead August 15. Clinton also has seen her favorability among American voters drop from 48 - 43 percent August 15 to 46 - 46 percent today. In other head-to-head matchups in the current survey: Clinton leads former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 46 - 41 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 48 - 38 percent, with both leads down from August 15; Obama ties McCain 43 - 43 percent and beats Thompson 45 - 37 percent and Romney 46 - 36 percent; Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards trails Giuliani 44 - 41 percent; ties McCain 42 - 42 percent, but beats Thompson 46 - 36 percent and Romney 47 - 34 percent. "Sen. Clinton's success on the campaign trail and the perception that she is unstoppable has made her the prime target for all the other candidates, Republican and Democratic. And the wounds are showing," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The Clinton Express has hit a bump. Future polls will show if it's been derailed." "Very bad news for Republicans: Most Americans think President Bush's poor standing in the polls will make it hard for ANY Republican to be elected President. Even Republicans split 48 - 48 percent on this one," Carroll added. "Congress isn't doing so hot in polls either. But most Democrats - and even a majority of Republicans - doubt that will taint their presidential candidate." Clinton has gained strength among Democrats nationwide and now leads Obama in the primary field 47 - 21 percent, with 12 percent for Edwards. This compares to a 36 - 21 percent Clinton lead among Democrats August 15. Giuliani has gained no ground among Republicans, with a 27 - 17 percent lead over Thompson, followed by Romney with 14 percent and McCain with 13 percent. Giuliani led Romney 28 - 15 percent, with 12 percent for Thompson and 11 percent for McCain August 15. "That Republican field remains volatile and only 13 percent of all voters, including only 9 percent of Republicans, think Giuliani has the nomination locked up," Carroll said. Favorability ratings for other contenders are: 47 - 32 percent for Giuliani; 49 - 25 percent for McCain; 50 - 26 percent for Obama; 46 - 29 percent for Edwards; 31 - 21 percent for Thompson; 28 - 25 percent for Romney. President Bush's Approval American voters disapprove 59 - 35 percent of the job President Bush is doing, his best score in the last year. Voters disapprove 70 - 21 percent of the job Congress is doing, tying the 70 - 20 percent all-time low August 16. From October 23 - 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,636 American voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percent, including 678 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent, and 742 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
