June 9, 2011 - Economic Worries Flatten Obama's Osama Bounce, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; More U.S. Voters Back President's Position On Israel Word format President Barack Obama's "bin Laden bounce" is flattening out, as American voters give him a 47 - 46 percent job approval rating, down from 52 - 40 percent May 5, immediately after the terrorist's killing. But voters are becoming more pessimistic about the economy and the lead President Obama enjoyed over the Republicans on handling it has disappeared, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. By 55 - 12 percent, registered voters sympathize more with Israel than the Palestinians, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. While 66 percent say the president should be a strong supporter of Israel, only 40 percent think that Obama is. Asked about his handling of the issue, 10 percent say it makes them more likely to vote for his re- election while 27 percent say less likely and 58 percent say it won't affect their vote. As criticism of the war in Afghanistan and the American contribution to the military effort in Libya increases, the public view of both is strongly negative: only 40 percent say the U.S. is doing the right thing in Afghanistan and 35 percent say the U.S. is doing the right thing in Libya. On the highly charged Medicare issue, American voters trust Obama more than Republicans in Congress by a small 44 - 40 percent margin. "Although President Barack Obama's overall approval numbers are better than before the killing of bin Laden, he continues to get strongly negative ratings on the economy," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "What should worry the White House is that 78 percent of voters think the country is in a recession and the number of voters who think a recovery has begun has dropped from 54 - 43 percent in a January 18 Quinnipiac University poll to a negative 45 - 52 percent today." American voters disapprove 58 - 36 percent of the way Obama is handling the economy, unchanged from the 57 - 37 percent disapproval May 5. While 41 percent trust Obama more to handle the economy, 43 percent trust Republicans in Congress more, reversing a 46 - 37 percent Obama lead on this question May 5. Looking at overall job approval, Obama's support among political independents, a key group, remains a slightly positive 46 - 43 percent, while he gets an 83 - 11 percent thumbs up from Democrats and an 82 - 13 percent thumbs down from Republicans. In the Middle East, Americans favor creation of a Palestinian State 45 - 30 percent, but when certain conditions are attached, voters turn strongly negative: Opposing 79 - 5 percent a state if Palestinians don't recognize Israel's right to exist; Opposing 76 - 9 percent a state if the Palestinians don't renounce terrorism; Saying 63 - 22 percent that Israel should not negotiate with a Palestinian government backed by Hamas; Saying 46 - 27 percent that Israel should be able to determine how many, if any, Palestinians are allowed to immigrate to Israel as opposed to allowing any who want to live in Israel; Supporting 42 - 30 percent the creation of a Palestinian state based on Israel's 1967 borders, including mutually agreed upon land swaps. By 34 - 15 percent, voters have a favorable opinion of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with 49 percent who don't know enough about him to form an opinion. "While we didn't mention President Obama, more American voters seem to back the Mideast peace plan which the president presented recently. Americans' strong support for Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians remains in place. They give lip service to the idea of a Palestinian state, by an unimpressive plurality, and are strongly in sync with much of Israel's opposition to a deal that includes conditions wanted by the Palestinians," said Brown. Voters who follow the Mideast situation more closely tend to be more supportive of Israel and less supportive of Obama's handling of the situation. From May 31 - June 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,946 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
