November 21, 2011 - U.S. Voters Say Almost 3-1 Super Committee Will Fail, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; More Blame Republicans Word format American voters say 69 - 24 percent that President Barack Obama and the Super Committee will fail to agree on a plan to reduce the federal deficit, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Expecting failure are Democrats 54 - 36 percent, Republicans 84 - 14 percent and independent voters 71 -22 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. A debt-reduction plan should include spending cuts only, 49 percent of voters say, while 39 percent want a mix of tax hikes and spending cuts. Support for spending cuts only is 73 - 21 percent among Republicans and 45 - 41 percent among independent voters, while Democrats want a mix of cuts and tax hikes 56 - 33 percent. Support for cuts only is 52 - 32 percent among voters making less than $30,000 per year, dropping to 51 - 41 percent among voters making more than $100,000 per year. White voters with a college degree support a mix of cuts and tax hikes 52 - 41 percent while white voters with no college degree want cuts only 55 - 33 percent. Voters blame Republicans in Congress more than President Obama and congressional Democrats 44 - 38 percent. Independent voters blame Republicans more 44 - 35 percent. "American voters are way ahead of the politicians. They knew the Super Committee had little chance of success. Watch for those job approval ratings to sink even lower, although the data indicate that at least for now voters hold the Republicans a bit more responsible," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. From November 14 - 20, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,552 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 1.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
