July 11, 2012 - Big Marriage Gap Keeps Obama Ahead By A Nose, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; American Voters Give Supreme Court Best Scores In DC Word format Driven by a yawning marriage gap, and a 2-1 lead among single women, President Barack Obama gets 46 percent of American voters to 43 percent for Gov. Mitt Romney, largely on the support of singles, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Married voters back Romney 51 - 38 percent, while unmarried voters back President Obama 54 - 34 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Among married voters, Romney leads 54 - 35 percent among men and 49 - 42 percent among women. Among single voters, Obama leads 47 - 38 percent among men and 60 - 31 percent among women. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts gets a higher job approval rating, 46 - 34 percent, than the president, who logs a negative 45 - 49 percent score. The Supreme Court itself gets a 47 - 41 percent approval rating. Voters disapprove 62 - 29 percent of the job Democrats in Congress are doing, and turn thumbs down on congressional Republicans 68 - 24 percent. "Although much has been made about the gender gap and how President Barack Obama's lead among women fuels his campaign, the marriage gap is actually larger and more telling," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Overall, President Obama has a 20-point lead among single voters compared to Romney's 13- point margin among married voters. "The marriage gap may be related to the different priorities and economic situations of married and single people," said Brown. "Married people are more likely to be older, more financially secure and more socially conservative than unmarried voters. The married column includes more Republicans and more white voters." "Married voters are more likely to focus on the economy and health care, while single voters are more focused on issues such as gay rights and reproductive issues," Brown added. Obama leads among Democrats 89 - 4 percent, while Romney takes Republicans 89 - 5 percent. Independent voters split with 43 percent for Romney and 41 percent for Obama. Men go Republican 47 - 40 percent, while women go Democratic 51 - 39 percent. Romney leads 51 - 38 percent among white voters while Obama leads 92 - 2 percent among black voters and 59 - 30 percent among Hispanic voters. White Catholics back Romney 53 - 38 percent. The president leads 51 - 41 percent among voters with college degrees, while voters without degrees split 43 - 44 percent. Both candidates have negative favorability ratings, 45 - 48 percent for Obama and 37 - 41 percent for Romney. American voters disapprove 55 - 40 percent of the way Obama is handling the economy, but split 45 - 46 percent on whether Obama or Romney would do a better job on the economy. Romney would be better for their own economic future, 47 percent say, while 44 percent pick Obama. By a 50 - 44 percent margin, voters have an unfavorable opinion of Obama's plans for the economy, compared to 46 - 40 percent unfavorable for Romney. By a small 47 - 44 percent margin, voters approve of the way the president is handling foreign policy. He gets a negative 39 - 52 percent on illegal immigration and a negative 43 - 52 percent on health care. Romney gains no traction on Obama's negatives as 45 percent say he would do a better job on immigration, compared to 43 percent for Obama. The president would do a better job on health care, 45 percent say, compared to 44 percent for Romney. Voters say 56 - 41 percent Obama cares about their needs, compared to the 50 - 42 percent who say Romney does not care. By 79 - 16 percent registered voters say Obama is likeable compared to the 65 - 27 percent who say that about Romney. From July 1 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,722 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 1.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
