May 5, 2004 - Bush And His Team Get Lowest Approval Ever, Nationwide Poll By Quinnipiac University Finds; But Kerry Gains Little Ground In Matchup American voters give President George W. Bush a split 46 - 47 percent approval rating, his lowest ever measured, and give key members of the Bush Administration their lowest marks ever, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. But President Bush still leads Democratic challenger John Kerry 43 - 40 percent, with 6 percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader, compared to the 46 - 40 percent lead in a March 24 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In this latest expanded survey, which allows for closer examination of subgroups, white women, a key voting block, back Bush 48 - 35 percent, with 6 percent for Nader. Approval ratings for other members of the Bush team are: 39 - 41 percent for Vice President Richard Cheney; 50 - 36 percent for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld; 71 - 19 percent for Secretary of State Colin Powell; 54 - 30 percent for National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice. "President Bush and his team are going down in their approval ratings, but Sen. Kerry is going nowhere. Bush has lost three points in the three-way matchup, but those three points did not go to Kerry. The so-called gender gap, where men favor the Republican candidate and women favor the Democrat, is very narrow right now, with the exception of white women, who are lining up strongly for Bush," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The gender gap widens as we look into concerns about the war in Iraq and whether the U.S. should commit more troops," Carroll added. The U.S. was right to go to war in Iraq, American voters say 48 - 45 percent, the lowest level of support yet measured and down from 54 - 39 percent in a March 24 Quinnipiac University poll. A total of 31 percent of voters say the Bush Administration did an "excellent" or "good" job planning for the situation in Iraq, while 67 percent say planning was "not so good" or "poor." But voters say 48 - 37 percent that Bush would do a better job than Kerry in "bringing the situation in Iraq to a successful conclusion." "It could be a contradiction - or the key to the 2004 election. Americans think the Bush team fouled up the occupation of Iraq, but they still trust the President to do a better job than Kerry in wrapping things up," Carroll said. Voters split 46 - 47 percent on increasing the number of U.S. military forces in Iraq; men support the increase 56 - 38 percent, as women oppose it 55 - 37 percent. American voters say 54 - 36 percent the economy is more important than Iraq in deciding how they vote, a shift from earlier polls where voters picked the economy 2-1. Men pick the economy 58 - 33 percent, as women name the economy 50 - 39 percent. A terrorist attack in the U.S., causing the loss of many lives, is "very likely" or "somewhat likely," 76 percent of voters say. From April 26 - May 3, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,016 registered voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and nationwide as a public service and for research.
