June 11, 2009 - Bombers Bloom In Garden State, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Phillies Rule In Less Populated South Jersey Word format The New York Yankees are the runaway favorites among New Jersey baseball fans, sweeping heavily populated North Jersey, which is in the New York TV market and topping the Philadelphia Phillies 44 - 20 percent statewide, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The New York Mets are the favorite Major League Baseball team for 21 percent of New Jersey fans, with 5 percent cheering for the Boston Red Sox, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN- uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. A total of 52 percent of New Jersey adults are "very interested" or "somewhat interested' in Major League Baseball. That includes 58 percent of men and 47 percent of women. Among these fans, the Yankees dominate in heavily urban and suburban areas of North Jersey, while the Phillies win the loyalty of 75 percent of fans in less populated South Jersey, which is in the Philadelphia TV market. "Dress New Jersey baseball fans - men and women, young and old - in Yankee pinstripes. There are just about as many Yankee fans as there are Phillies and Mets backers combined. Only in the Philadelphia suburbs do the Phillies dominate," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. From June 3 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,502 New Jersey adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points.
