July 14, 2009 - Christie Up 12 In New Jersey, A Step Ahead On Boardwalk, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama Approval At 60 Percent Among Likely Voters Word format Republican challenger Christopher Christie is pulling away from Democratic incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine and now holds a 53 - 41 percent lead among likely voters in the New Jersey Governor's race, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This compares to a 50 - 40 percent lead for the former federal prosecutor in a June 10 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In a three-way matchup among likely voters, Christie leads Gov. Corzine 47 - 38 percent, with 8 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett. Christie is one step ahead in the Boardwalk Poll as likely voters say 40 - 38 percent that they would rather stroll the Atlantic City Boardwalk with him. Men prefer strolling with Christie 44 - 35 percent, while women prefer Corzine 40 - 38 percent. In the two-way face-off, Corzine leads 76 - 19 percent among Democratic likely voters, while Christie leads 89 - 7 percent among Republicans and 64 - 28 percent among independent voters. This is a jump from Christie's 56 - 32 percent lead among independent voters June 10. In a three-way race, Daggett gets 13 percent of independent voters, with 54 percent for Christie and 24 percent for Corzine. "Good news for Christopher Christie: As voters focus on the campaign, he increases his lead slightly in the match-up against Corzine," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Good news for Gov. Jon Corzine: President Barack Obama is coming in and Obama's job numbers among New Jersey voters are good." "Politicians love to ponder who a third candidate hurts. Christopher Daggett helps Corzine a little. But virtually nobody knows him. Let's see what happens if his campaign starts to attract attention beyond the politics groupies," Carroll said. "Who'd be a better companion on a stroll along the Atlantic City boardwalk? Christie wins on that 'nice guy' question, most strongly among the folks who live down near the beach. Does being a nice guy matter in a political candidate? A total of 67 percent of New Jersey voters say it's very important or somewhat important." By a 39 - 20 percent margin, New Jersey likely voters have a favorable opinion of Christie, while 40 percent say they don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Corzine gets a negative 34 - 58 percent favorability. For Daggett, 92 percent don't know enough to form an opinion. New Jersey registered voters disapprove 60 - 33 percent of the job Corzine is doing, his lowest rating ever and down from a 56 - 36 percent disapproval June 10. Independent voters disapprove 69 - 24 percent. Likely voters also disapprove 60 - 33 percent. Likely voters say 50 - 36 percent that Christie would do a better job handling the state budget and 54 - 30 percent that the Republican would do a better job cleaning up corruption. Christie's attacks that Corzine has not kept his campaign promises are fair, 45 percent of voters say, but 44 percent say the economic downturn is to blame. Only 10 percent of voters say Corzine's attacks that Christie is too close to former President George W. Bush are fair, but 77 percent say Corzine should focus on state issues. Obama Approval New Jersey likely voters approve 60 - 34 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing, the first time this question has been asked of likely voters. Obama gets 90 - 7 percent approval from Democrats and 54 - 38 percent approval from independent voters, while Republicans turn thumbs down 71 - 21 percent. From July 8 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,514 New Jersey likely voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and nationally as a public service and for research.
