June 21, 2010 - Love For Yankees Grows In Garden State, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; 90 Percent Of New Jerseyans Welcome Super Bowl XLVIII Word format The New York Yankees have more fans in New Jersey than the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets combined and lead the Phillies 2-1 in a repeat World Series matchup, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Of the 55 percent of New Jersey residents who say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball, 47 percent list the Yankees as their favorite team, with 21 percent for the Mets and 20 percent for the Phillies. This compares to 44 percent for the Yankees, 21 percent for the Mets and 20 percent for the Phillies in a June 11, 2009, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Among all adults, 55 percent would like to see the Yankees repeat as World Series champions, while 28 percent are pulling for the Phillies. This compares to a 58 - 28 percent Yankees lead in an October 29 survey. The Yankees rule in North Jersey 71 - 12 percent while the Phillies are on top in South Jersey 63 - 25 percent. Central Jersey goes with the Bronx Bombers 58 - 22 percent. "Baseball in New Jersey is a battle of North and South. The New York Yankees dominate in the North, where most of the people live, and Central Jersey, which gets New York television," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Even the Mets pick up a little love among all those ex-Dodger fans who moved to New Jersey." "But in Philly-land, the Deep South of the Garden State, we root for the Phillies." Turning to football, a total of 65 percent of New Jersey residents are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in the National Football League. Among all Garden State residents, 80 percent approve of the choice of the Meadowlands for the 2014 Super Bowl and 90 percent say having the Super Bowl in New Jersey is a "good thing." Results among men and women and among all age groups for both questions are almost identical. "Two-thirds of us follow the NFL and just about all of us are happy that the Super Bowl will be coming to the Meadowlands, the home (as everyone here knows) of the New Jersey Giants and the New Jersey Jets," Carroll said. From June 10 - 15, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,650 New Jersey adults, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.
