June 23, 2011 - Yankees Top Phillies 2-1 Among New Jersey Fans, Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll Word format New Jersey baseball fans back the New York Yankees over the Philadelphia Phillies 48 - 22 percent, with 16 percent cheering for the New York Mets, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The Boston Red Sox get 3 percent with other teams at 1 percent each. The Bronx Bombers lead in every section of the state except in the Philadelphia suburbs, which go to the Phillies 77 - 14 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Statewide, women like the Yankees 51 - 23 percent, with 13 percent for the Mets, while men back the Bombers 46 - 22 percent, with 19 percent for the Amazins. The survey was conducted among the 56 percent of New Jersey adults who are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball. "More New Jersey fans watch New York television than watch Philadelphia television. This is what you get in a state with no dedicated TV station, and no Major League Baseball team," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "We do, however, have two National Football League teams, the New Jersey Jets and the New Jersey Giants - even if they don't admit it." From June 14 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,789 New Jersey adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
