April 11, 2012 - New Jersey Voters Back NYPD In Garden State 3-1, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Dems' Property Tax Cut More Popular Than Gov's Plan Word format New Jersey voters say 70 - 21 percent that the New York Police Department (NYPD) is "doing what is necessary to combat terrorism" by gathering information on Muslim organizations and activities in the Garden State, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Even voters in urban areas, which includes Newark and Jersey City, say 58 - 32 percent that the NYPD is doing what is necessary. No group measured in the survey disagrees. Voters agree with Gov. Christopher Christie 46 - 23 percent that the NYPD did not adequately inform New Jersey officials, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. But voters disagree 56 - 32 percent with Gov. Christie's criticism of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. The NYPD treats Muslims appropriately, 62 percent of New Jersey voters say, while 18 percent say the NYPD targets Muslims unfairly. New Jersey voters still approve 59 - 36 percent of the job Christie is doing, his best score ever. Approval is 92 - 6 percent among Republicans and 64 - 32 percent among independent voters. Democrats disapprove 64 - 30 percent. Christie is more of a leader, 54 percent of voters say, while 39 percent say he is more of a bully. "New Jerseyans reject that recent media brouhaha over checking up on Muslims in New Jersey by New York City police. Welcome, New Jersey voters tell the cops from across the Hudson. They don't think the NYPD transgressed jurisdictional lines," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Does the NYPD 'unfairly target' Muslims? New York City voters said 'no' 58 - 29 percent when we asked them last month and New Jersey voters say 'no' even more emphatically, by a 62 - 18 percent margin," Carroll added. "Whether Gov. Christopher Christie is traveling the nation, campaigning for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, or traveling to Israel to tout New Jersey business, his job- approval rating at home in Trenton continues to climb." New Jersey voters approve 58 - 35 percent of the way Christie is handling the state budget and support his proposed 10 percent across-the-board state income tax cut 54 - 32 percent. Voters also support 57 - 24 percent State Senate President Stephen Sweeney's proposal for a 10 percent property tax credit for households with an annual income of $250,000 or less. Given a choice, voters prefer Sweeney's proposed property tax cut over Christie's proposed income tax cut 49 - 38 percent. Preferring the property tax cut are Democrats 62 - 22 percent and independent voters 52 - 39 percent. Republicans back the income tax cut 58 - 32 percent. By income, only voters with a household income over $250,000 prefer the income tax cut. Voters in every region, except rural areas, prefer the property tax cut. Fifty percent of New Jersey voters agree with Christie's position against a millionaires' tax while 47 percent disagree. "In the big tax-cut debate: Gov. Christie's plan or Senate President Stephen Sweeney's plan - voters like them both," Carroll said. "But in high-property-tax New Jersey, they like Sweeney's plan more." In the controversy over the State Senate Judiciary Committee's rejection of Phillip Kwon, Christie's nominee to the State Supreme Court, 75 percent of voters have no opinion. "The political world was stirred by the Senate's first-ever rejection of a governor's Supreme Court nominee, but New Jersey voters couldn't care less. Most voters haven't even heard of it," Carroll said. From April 3 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,607 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
