September 6, 2012 - Obama Tops Romney Among New Jersey Likely Voters, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Menendez Has 10-Point Lead Over Kyrillos Word format President Barack Obama tops Gov. Mitt Romney, his Republican challenger, 51 - 44 percent among New Jersey likely voters, who say the president will do a better job on Medicare and health care while Romney will do a better job on the economy, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is the first measure of New Jersey likely voters by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University and can not be compared to earlier surveys of registered voters. The gender and racial gaps are wide as Obama leads 57 - 38 percent among women and 92 - 3 percent among blacks. Romney leads 51 - 44 percent among men and 54 - 41 percent among white voters. Romney has a thin 48 - 44 percent lead among independent voters. New Jersey voters give Obama a 52 - 44 percent favorability, while Romney has a 43 - 41 percent score. Vice President Joseph Biden gets a 44 - 41 percent favorability. U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, has a split 33 - 34 percent favorability, with 33 percent who don't know enough about him to form an opinion. "Gov. Mitt Romney trails President Barack Obama by 7 points in blue, blue New Jersey. Is it a post-convention bounce for Romney and will the president get his own bounce this week?" asked Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The votes look to be locked in. Almost 90 percent of Obama's New Jersey voters and more than 90 percent of Romney backers say they'll stand by their man." "U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, gets mixed reviews: 33 percent of Garden State voters say he's qualified to be president, while 29 percent say no and 37 percent don't know. Vice President Joseph Biden is qualified to step up, voters say 46 - 37 percent." New Jersey voters say 59 - 38 percent that Obama cares about their needs and problems. Only 45 percent say Romney cares, while 48 percent say he doesn't care. Voters list several issues as "extremely important" in their presidential vote: 67 percent say the economy; 54 percent cite health care; 46 percent point to taxes; 45 percent list the budget deficit; 44 percent say Medicare. Romney would do a better job on the economy, 48 percent of voters say, while 45 percent pick Obama. Obama does a better job on health care, voters say 52 - 43 percent, and on Medicare, voters say 51 - 41 percent. Government is doing too many things better left to business and individuals, 51 percent of New Jersey voters say, while 43 percent say government should do more. "The big party split is on government's role: Half of all voters, including 83 percent of Republicans, say government is doing too much; a bit less than half, including 70 percent of Democrats, say government should solve problems," Carroll said. U.S. Senate Race Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez leads State Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, his Republican challenger, 50 - 40 percent in this first likely voter survey. Women back Menendez 55 - 33 percent while men are divided with 47 percent for Kyrillos and 44 percent for Menendez. Independent voters go Democratic 46 - 39 percent. White voters back Kyrillos 49 - 41 percent while black voters back Menendez 89 - 5 percent. New Jersey voters approve 49 - 33 percent of the job Menendez is doing. The incumbent has a 42 - 28 percent favorability. For Kyrillos, 65 percent don't know enough about him to form an opinion. From August 27 - September 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,471 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
