April 24, 2013 - Dem Gains No Ground In New Jersey Governor's Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Jobs, Taxes, Spending Are Top Issues In Campaign Word format PDF format With about six months to Election Day, New Jersey State Sen. Barbara Buono, the Democrat challenging Gov. Christopher Christie in the Garden State governor's race, remains largely unknown and essentially is gaining no ground as she trails the incumbent 58 - 26 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This compares to a 60 - 25 percent lead for Gov. Christie in a March 26 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Today, Christie leads 55 - 27 percent among women, 63 - 25 percent among men, 92 - 3 percent among Republicans and 64 - 18 percent among independent voters. Sen. Buono leads 52 - 30 percent among Democrats. New Jersey voters approve 67 - 24 percent of the job Christie is doing and say 66 - 26 percent that he deserves reelection. By a 66 - 24 percent margin, voters have a favorable opinion of the governor. For Buono, 78 percent don't know enough to form an opinion, compared to 79 percent last month. "She's running an energetic campaign, piling up endorsements, but State Sen. Barbara Buono, who wants to be New Jersey's next governor, hasn't been able to introduce herself yet to New Jersey voters," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Could this be a sweep? Gov. Christopher Christie trounces Sen. Buono and her own party's leaders don't want to let her pick the state chairman. But there's some cheer for Democrats: Voters say 45 - 38 percent, they want the Democrats to maintain control of the State Legislature." A total of 59 percent of New Jersey voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the state today, while 40 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied." Jobs will be "very important" in their vote for governor, 83 percent of New Jersey voters say, while 15 percent say "somewhat important. Other "very important" issues are: Government spending - 74 percent "very important;" Property taxes - 73 percent; Schools - 70 percent; Hurricane Sandy recovery - 57 percent; Millionaires' Tax - 47 percent; Minimum wage - 47 percent; Same-sex marriage - 30 percent. "Happiness helps incumbents. New Jerseyans like the way things are going and they like Gov. Christie," Carroll said. "It's a New Jersey specialty. Property taxes are set locally, not in Trenton, but they're a big concern in the statewide campaign for governor. Voters also cite jobs, schools and government spending." Sen. Menendez Approval New Jersey voters approve 44 - 32 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez is doing, up from 40 - 37 percent March 27 and a negative 36 - 41 percent February 20, in the wake of allegations of impropriety. Voters say 39 - 32 percent that Sen. Menendez is honest and trustworthy, also continuing an upward climb. U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg gets a 47 - 31 percent approval rating. "Has Sen. Robert Menendez weathered all those bad headlines? His job approval is inching up and, although they want an investigation, a third of New Jerseyans think the stuff was politically motivated," Carroll said. From April 19 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,112 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
