April 25, 2013 - New Jersey Voters Disapprove Of Rutgers Payouts, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Boston Bombing Will Not Keep Voters Away From Events Word format PDF format New Jersey voters disapprove 64 - 7 percent of the large payouts to Rutgers University officials who left the university in the wake of the scandal involving the men's basketball coach, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Voters are divided on the future of Rutgers President Robert Barchi, as 25 percent say he should be fired, while 29 percent say he should not be fired, with 42 percent undecided, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Disapproval of the cash payments ranges from 55 - 13 percent among voters in urban areas to 69 - 6 percent among independent voters. Men disapprove 60 - 11 percent while women disapprove 68 - 4 percent. There are no large differences among groups on Dr. Barchi's future, except for Democrats, where 30 percent say he should be fired and 26 percent say he should not be fired. Black voters also say 30 - 16 that Barchi should go. New Jersey voters approve 62 - 12 percent of the decision to fire Mike Rice. Republicans approve 51 - 15 percent while Democrats support the firing 69 - 6 percent. "Were those big Rutgers payouts to the ousted trio a reward for bad behavior? They attracted a lot of criticism as the news trickled out, and two thirds of New Jersey voters tell Quinnipiac University they were a bad decision," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. New Jersey voters say 73 - 24 percent that they will continue to attend large events in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. The commitment to large events is 67 percent or higher among every group. A total of 49 percent of voters are "very worried" or "somewhat worried" that they or a family member will become a victim of a terrorist attack, with 50 percent who are "not too worried" or "not worried at all." A total of 55 percent of woman are "very" or "somewhat" worried, compared to 42 percent of men. New Jersey voters approve 68 - 27 percent of the way President Barack Obama is handling terrorism, with only Republicans disapproving 59 - 35 percent. Gov. Christopher Christie gets a 67 - 10 percent approval rating for handling terror, with approval of 56 percent or higher from every group except black voters who approve 48 - 22 percent. "After the Boston Marathon bombing, New Jersey voters have some concerns about their own safety, but they give President Barack Obama and Gov. Christopher Christie good marks on combating terrorism. From April 19 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,112 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
