September 22, 2004 - McGreevey Should Say Goodbye To Politics, New Jersey Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Most Don't Think They'll Ever Vote For Him Agian Only 35 percent of New Jersey voters say it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that they would ever vote for Gov. James McGreevey if he runs for office in the future, while 13 percent say it is "not too likely" and 49 percent say it's "not likely at all," according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Voters say 56 - 41 percent that McGreevey should resign November 15, rather than step down immediately. But voters say 61 - 30 percent that it would be "a bad thing," if he changes his mind and doesn't resign, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. "New Jersey voters tell Gov. McGreevey it's OK to wait until November 15 to resign, but please close the door firmly behind you," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Voters are split on whether McGreevey should have resigned in the first place, but they say 2 -1 that he'd better stick with the plan and leave November 15. And they are not very likely, at least not now, of ever voting for him again." Voters give McGreevey a 51 - 40 percent disapproval rating, little changed from his approval ratings in Quinnipiac University polls conducted just before and just after he announced his resignation. McGreevey will be able to lead the state effectively until November 15, voters say 57 - 40 percent. By a 70 - 20 percent margin, New Jersey voters say the State Constitution should be amended so that the successor to the governor is not also serving as the State Senate President. From September 16 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 943 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida and nationally as a public service and for research.
