August 31, 2007 - Yankees, Jeter Are The Princes Of The City, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds Word format By a 52 - 44 percent margin, New York City baseball fans back the Yankees over the Mets in a Subway Series, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Only Queens residents support the Mets, 55 - 40 percent. The strongest support for the Bombers comes from The Bronx, 66 - 31 percent. The Yankees are the favorite team of 51 percent of New Yorkers while the Mets claim the hearts of 35 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Another 3 percent cheer for the Red Sox. Derek Jeter is their favorite Bomber, according to 43 percent of Yankees fans, split evenly between men and women, followed by Alex Rodriguez with 15 percent. For 27 percent of Mets fans, Jose Reyes is the top Amazin', followed by David Wright with 16 percent. "It's still a Yankees town. And Jeter's still our favorite Yankee. Mets fans like Reyes" said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "You've heard that all politics is local? So is all sports fandom. Only Shea Stadium's neighbors in Queens would root for the Mets in a Subway Series. The Bronx cheers loudest for the Bronx Bombers." From August 21 - 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,461 New York City residents, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points, 729 baseball fans with a margin of error of +/- 3.6%.
