March 25, 2009 - New Yorkers To Mayor: Take Me Out To The Ballgame, Quinnipiac University New York City Poll Finds; Yankees Top Mets In Hearts Of New York Fans Word format By a narrow 49 - 46 percent margin, New Yorkers would like to go to a baseball game with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Since 49 percent of all New Yorkers say they are "not at all" interested in Major League Baseball, that's probably not a bad fan base. In an open-ended question, the 50 percent of adult New Yorkers who say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball were asked to pick their favorite team. The Yankees are number one, at 56 percent, with the Mets at 33 percent, followed by 3 percent for the Red Sox, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Baseball fans want to see a game with Mayor Bloomberg 60 - 38 percent, 61 - 37 percent among Yankees fans and 57 - 39 percent among Mets fans. If the Yankees face the Mets in a Subway Series, 55 percent of New York City fans back the Bombers and 42 percent pull for the Amazins. The Mets win 51 - 46 percent in Queens, while the Yankees are number one in the other boroughs, especially The Bronx 69 - 30 percent. "While it's a close call among all New Yorkers, seeing a ballgame with Mayor Mike is a big hit among baseball fans," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Yankees fans especially would like Mayor Bloomberg to buy them some peanuts and crackerjacks. "Except for Queens, New York City still is the home of the Bronx Bombers, who are favored in The Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, too." When New Yorkers are given four teams from which to choose, 42 percent of adults list the Yankees as their favorite team, with 28 percent who cite the Mets, 7 percent who follow the Brooklyn Cyclones and 3 percent who cheer for the Staten Island Yankees. Interest in the new Yankee Stadium and the Mets Citi Field is about even as 30 percent of adults say they plan a trip to The Bronx to see the new stadium, compared to 29 percent who plan a trip to Flushing to see the new home of the Mets. "If we can't go with Mayor Bloomberg, then we'll watch on TV. Two thirds of New Yorkers don't plan to visit the new stadiums this year," Carroll said. Derek Jeter is the favorite of 48 percent of Bombers fans, including 51 percent of women and 46 percent of men. Alex Rodriguez gets the nod from only 9 percent of pinstripe fans, followed by Mariano Rivera at 5 percent. David Wright is the most Amazin' for 27 percent of Mets fans, with 17 percent cheering for Jose Reyes and 4 percent for Carlos Beltran. "Derek Jeter owns the hearts of Yankee fans. With the Mets, it's more of a collective: David Wright, followed by the whole team," Carroll said. "And A-Rod's off-field antics are taking a toll on his popularity." From March 17 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,362 New York City adults, with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points.
