May 10, 2012 - Dems Top Kelly Big Time In New York City Mayoral Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Like Kelly As Top Cop, Not As Mayor Word format While Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has the highest approval rating of any New York City official, he trails each of three leading Democratic candidates by double digits in an early look at the 2013 race for mayor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Running Kelly as a Republican against likely Democratic contenders, the independent Quinnipiac University poll finds: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn tops Kelly 48 - 33 percent; Former City Comptroller and 2009 Democratic candidate William Thompson leads Kelly 46 - 34 percent; Public Advocate Bill de Blasio beats Kelly 46 - 34 percent. In these matchups, Kelly gets 82 to 84 percent of Republicans, but trails with Democrats by margins of 51 to 55 points. Independent voters back Kelly by margins of 10 to 17 points. Speaker Quinn leads in a Democratic primary with 26 percent, followed by: Thompson with 13 percent; de Blasio with 10 percent; City Comptroller John Liu with 7 percent; Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer with 4 percent. Another 34 percent of Democrats remain undecided. "Ray Kelly is a great police commissioner, and he'd be a good mayor, New Yorkers think - but it's still a Democratic town. All three of the Democrats' top potential candidates beat the popular top cop," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Voters are taking seriously all that Kelly-for-mayor noise among Republican leaders. More than half think he might run. "Among Democrats, Council Speaker Christine Quinn is the favorite. Former Comptroller William Thompson and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio are in double digits, but she's comfortably ahead. The leader in this early look remains 'don't know.'" New York City voters approve 49 - 42 percent of the job Mayor Michael Bloomberg is doing, compared to 54 - 35 percent in a March 13 Quinnipiac University poll. Bloomberg has lost his focus in his third term, voters say 52 - 41 percent. Voters disapprove 60 - 29 percent of the way Bloomberg is handling the public schools and say 60 - 17 percent that the next mayor should share control of the schools with an independent board. The mayor's policy of closing and replacing low performing schools is an attack on the teachers' union rather than good policy, voters say 44 - 38 percent. New York City voters have a 51 - 20 percent favorable opinion of public school teachers and say 44 - 40 percent that the teachers' union is helping rather than hurting the effort to improve education. Voters approve 57 - 35 percent, including 64 - 30 percent among voters with children in public schools, making public the results of teacher evaluations. But voters say 51 - 19 percent that the results are flawed. "Are New Yorkers getting a bit bored with their three-term mayor? Mayor Bloomberg's job approval numbers drop and there doesn't seem to be any specific reason for it," Carroll said. "New Yorkers remain unhappy with the public schools and say 2-1 they don't think Mayor Mike is doing a very good job on education. Should the next mayor emulate Bloomberg in having control of the schools? Voters don't think so. They prefer some sort of shared control." "It may not seem consistent: voters mistrust the validity of teacher evaluations but still want the results made public." Voters approve 66 - 23 percent of the job Kelly is doing as police commissioner, continuing his string of +60 grades, and say 50 - 34 percent he would make a good mayor. Approval ratings for other city-wide officials are: 57 - 23 percent for Quinn; 41 - 32 percent for Liu; 48 - 13 percent for de Blasio; 39 - 34 percent for Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott. From May 3 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,066 New York City registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 658 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
