May 11, 2012 - Most New Yorkers Want Smoke-Free Living, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; More Approve Of Mint-Green Outer Borough Cabs Word format New York City voters say 59 - 34 percent that they would like to live in a building where no one is allowed to smoke, but these same voters say 53 - 44 percent that City Hall should not pressure building owners to ban indoor smoking, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Men would like to live in a smoke-free building 55 - 39 percent while women want smoke-free living 63 - 30 percent. New Yorkers have mixed feelings about so-called "Nanny Government," as 45 percent say the government should discourage unhealthy eating and drinking habits while 48 percent say the government shouldn't get involved, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Bloomberg Administration steps to improve health habits are "about right," 45 percent of voters say, while 33 percent say they have gone "too far" and 13 percent say "not far enough." "New York City voters have a love-hate relationship with 'Nanny Government.' They would like their landlord or their condo or coop board to ban indoor smoking, but they don't want City Hall to pressure building owners to take that step," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Only about one-third of voters say the Bloomberg Administration has gone too far trying to make us healthier. A total of 58 percent say those measures are about right or not enough. But then voters are divided on whether government should be involved all. "Go figure." New York City voters do think 64 - 30 percent that the city's bicycle rental program is a good idea. No group disagrees. But voters say 51 - 45 percent they do not want more bike lanes in their neighborhood. The biggest calls for more bike lanes are in Manhattan, 52 - 42 percent, and The Bronx, 51 - 46 percent. The biggest 'no' comes from Staten Island, 66 - 32 percent, followed by Queens, which is 54 - 41 percent opposed, and Brooklyn, opposed 54 - 42 percent. Living Wage Bill New York City voters support 74 - 18 percent the Living Wage Bill, recently passed by the City Council. Support is 82 - 11 percent among Democrats, 70 - 22 percent among independent voters and 50 - 41 percent among Republicans. Support tops 69 percent in every borough. Support is 75 - 16 percent among women and 74 - 21 percent among men. Voters reject 60 - 28 percent the claim that the Living Wage Bill will cost jobs. Republicans see fewer jobs 47 - 43 percent, but disagreement is 64 - 24 percent among Democrats and 59 - 28 percent among independent voters. "The Living Wage Bill is more symbolic than substantive, but - it's a liberal city - New Yorkers approve 4-1," Carroll said. Kermit the Cab The plan for new mint green taxicabs serving the outer boroughs wins 48 - 25 percent support from New York City voters. Support ranges from 42 - 31 percent in Staten Island to 52 - 14 percent in Manhattan. No group is opposed. New Yorkers even like the mint green color selected for the cabs, 48 - 31 percent, but there is a gender gap: men like the color 50 - 28 percent while women like it 46 - 34 percent. Bronx voters dislike the color 45 - 39 percent. But voters in other boroughs are ready to go green. "It's not easy being green, at least in The Bronx, but New Yorkers seem ready to embrace the new non-Manhattan taxis - and their mint green, or apple green or chartreuse color." From May 3 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,066 New York City voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
