June 9, 2004 - Bloomberg Approval Hits 50%, But Ferrer Is Ahead, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Kelly Approval At 67% As Voters Back Bravest, Finest Mayor Michael Bloomberg's approval rating has hit 50 percent for the first time in two years, as New York City voters give him a 50 - 38 percent grade for the job he is doing, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is up from a 47 - 41 percent approval in a March 31 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In this current survey, white voters approve 60 - 29 percent, as black voters disapprove 47 - 38 percent and Hispanic voters disapprove 48 - 39 percent. Voters say 65 - 28 percent that Bloomberg has strong leadership qualities, but feel 55 - 37 percent that he is not in touch with the problems ordinary New Yorkers face. "Mayor Bloomberg has been on a steady climb back to the approval numbers he enjoyed when he was the new guy in City Hall, before the bloom was off the rose," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Living like a billionaire must be nice, but it can hurt with the neighbors: New Yorkers still don't think Mayor Mike is in touch with them. They think he's a strong leader and that he's honest and trustworthy, but he's not yet Mayor Mensch." Looking at the 2005 mayoral campaign, Fernando Ferrer beats Bloomberg 45 - 39 percent. The Mayor has a slight edge over the other possible challengers: 40 - 38 percent over Council Speaker Gifford Miller; 41 - 38 percent over Comptroller William Thompson; 43 - 39 percent over Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields; 42 - 37 percent over U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner; 42 - 34 percent over Council member Charles Barron. These matchups are little changed from the March 31 Quinnipiac University poll. "Mayor Bloomberg's approval is inching up, but there has been little change in the mayoral matchups, and probably won't be until the campaigning - and the spending - begins in earnest," Carroll said. Police and Fire New York City voters give Police Commissioner Ray Kelly a 67 - 16 percent approval rating, identical to the March 31 poll results. Black voters approve 64 - 27 percent, as white voters approve 74 - 10 percent and Hispanic voters approve 61- 18 percent. Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta gets a 51 - 17 percent approval, with 32 percent undecided. The Police and Fire Departments "are able to work together effectively to deal with a major terrorist attack," New York City voters say 57 - 34 percent. Prior to September 11, 2001, the two departments were not able to work together effectively, voters say 56 - 34 percent. "New Yorkers think the Bravest and Finest were not prepared for the September 11 terrorist attack. Under the Bloomberg Administration, however, voters say the uniformed services are ready," Carroll said. From June 1 - 7, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,226 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
