November 11, 2004 - New Yorkers Back 2012 Olympic Bid 2 - 1, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Back Javits, But Oppose Stadium By a 64 - 30 percent margin, New York City voters support the city's bid to host the 2012 Olympics, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Support for the Olympics ranges from 52 - 40 percent among Manhattan voters to 72 - 25 percent in The Bronx. By a 77 - 17 percent margin, New Yorkers oppose building a West Side stadium for the Olympics and the New York Jets football team, unless - as supporters claim - the stadium generates enough income to pay off the money the city and state would borrow to help build it. If the added revenue does cover the city/state borrowing costs, New York City voters support the stadium 57 - 39 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds. Voters disagree 47 - 39 percent with Mayor Michael Bloomberg's claim that without the stadium the city will not win the 2012 Olympic bid. "New Yorkers want the Olympics, but there is little love for the proposed West Side stadium. If Mayor Bloomberg wants that stadium, he'll have to convince voters that we can't get the Olympics without it and that we won't have to pay for it," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. New York City voters support the other components of the West Side plan: 57 - 32 percent to expand the Jacob Javits Convention Center; 72 - 20 percent to extend the Number 7 subway line; 58 - 31 percent to rezone the area to allow for apartment and office buildings. But when asked about a plan which includes all the components, including the stadium, New York City voters are opposed 52 - 40 percent. "The stadium drags down the whole West Side package. Leave it out and the other components win big, including more than 3 - 1 support for extending the Number 7 subway line," Carroll said. From November 5 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,221 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
