August 2, 2000 - Race Is Key Factor In New Yorkers' View Of Mayor, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Black Approval Improves, But Is Still Largely Negative Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's 48 - 42 percent approval rating continues to show a marked difference between black and white New York City voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. White voters approve 63 - 30 percent of the job Mayor Giuliani is doing, while black voters give him a negative 25 - 63 percent rating and Hispanic voters approve 47 - 38 percent. Only 35 percent of voters would like to see Giuliani run for another term as Mayor in 2005, while 58 percent of voters say he should not run. White voters are split 46 - 46 percent that Giuliani should return, while black voters reject the idea 9 - 86 percent. Hispanic voters say no 46 - 51 percent on a possible return. White New York City voters say 50 - 43 percent that Giuliani should run for Governor in 2002, but black and Hispanic voters are so strongly against the idea that 60 percent of the full voter tally is opposed. "New Yorkers are telling their Mayor, `Nice job, but enough already.' Among all voters, there is little enthusiasm for Giuliani's political future," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "While this is Giuliani's highest approval rating among black voters in 20 months, black voters still are opposed to this Mayor in such large numbers that it overwhelms his support in other communities." A total of 66 percent of New Yorkers are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with life in New York City. And 26 percent expect things to get better in New York in the next year, while 13 percent expect them to get worse and 53 percent expect them to stay the same. Voters give the Mayor a 40 - 35 percent favorability rating, with 24 percent mixed and 1 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. This compares with a 41 - 38 percent favorability rating in a June 14 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University. But only Public Advocate Mark Green is emerging from the pack in terms of voter recognition. "More people like than dislike Controller Alan Hevesi, Council Speaker Peter Vallone or Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer. But most New Yorkers are either mixed or just don't know." From July 26 - 31, Quinnipiac University surveyed 753 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percent.
