October 25, 2005 - Bloomberg Keeps 31-Point Lead After Terror Alert, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Few Say Mayor Has Too Many Commercials Even after calling off the subway terror alert, Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg still leads Democratic challenger Fernando Ferrer 61 - 30 percent among New York City likely voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Conservative candidate Thomas Ognibene gets 2 percent and 7 percent are undecided. Mayor Bloomberg had opened a 60 - 32 percent lead over Ferrer in an October 12 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, conducted just as the Mayor announced a major alert about possible terrorism in the subways. In this latest survey, conducted one week after the Mayor called off the alert, Bloomberg leads Ferrer 77 - 18 percent among white likely voters, and by a narrow 48 - 44 percent among black likely voters, while Hispanic likely voters back Ferrer 48 - 43 percent. "Mayor Bloomberg's domination persists. Some politicians think lots of black voters will 'come home' to the Democratic line and lots of Hispanic voters will pull the lever for the Hispanic candidate. But, with two weeks until Election Day, it's shaping up as a blow-out to end all blow-outs," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Their mind is made up, 92 percent of Bloomberg supporters and 85 percent of Ferrer voters say." By a 62 - 11 percent margin, New York City likely voters have a favorable opinion of Bloomberg, with 23 percent mixed. Ferrer gets a 30 - 27 percent favorability, with 34 percent mixed and 8 percent who say they haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Bloomberg's personal wealth gives him an unfair advantage in the mayoral race, voters say 51 - 47 percent. Among the 91 percent of likely voters who have seen any of Bloomberg's TV commercials, 58 percent say they are "useful," while 35 percent say they are "not useful." Only 35 percent of voters who have seen Bloomberg commercials, say he has "too many," with 56 percent who say the number is "about right." By a 58 - 37 percent margin, voters agree with Ferrer's position that there are "two New Yorks," one for the rich and one for the poor. But by a narrow 48 - 45 percent margin, voters say that Ferrer is being "divisive" by saying there are two New Yorks. White voters say 58 - 36 percent that it is divisive, while black voters say 52 - 37 percent that it is not divisive and Hispanic voters say 51 - 41 percent that it is not divisive. The 80 percent of voters who have seen Ferrer TV commercials split 47 - 46 percent on whether they are "useful" or "not useful." Among people who have seen Ferrer commercials, only 5 percent say there are "too many," with 42 percent who say "too few," and 45 percent who say "about right." "A backlash from a sense of 'over-kill' that some politicians looked for isn't there. Bloomberg ads crowd TV screens but, just like in Goldilocks, voters think their daily helping of Bloomberg porridge is just about right," Carroll said. "Is the city divided between haves and have-nots? New Yorkers think so. Is Ferrer wrong in saying so? The verdict is split." From October 18 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,413 New York City registered voters. The survey includes 723 likely voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
