February 14, 2007 - New York Voters Luv Clinton Over Giuliani For '08, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Both New Yorkers Clear Choice Of Their Parties Sen. Hillary Clinton leads former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani 50 - 40 percent among New York State voters in an early test of the 2008 presidential campaign, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Sen. Clinton tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 56 - 35 percent. In other possible presidential matchups, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds: Clinton over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 61 - 25 percent; Illinois Sen. Barack Obama over McCain 46 - 35 percent; 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards over McCain 48 - 35 percent. Clinton is the choice of 47 percent of Democratic voters, followed by Obama with 16 percent, former Vice President Al Gore with 11 percent and Edwards with 7 percent. Among Republicans, Giuliani gets 51 percent, followed by McCain with 17 percent, former Gov. George Pataki with 7 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 6 percent and Romney at 1 percent. "Happy Valentine's Day, Sen. Clinton. New York State voters say you're the fairest of them all, even Mayor Giuliani," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "New Yorkers remember Tip O'Neill's line that all politics is local and pick a native son and a not-so-native daughter as their favorites for the 2008 Presidential Prom," Carroll added. "After that, New Yorkers remember that their state is blue and Democrats win in any of the matchups we've tested so far. "Gov. Mitt Romney from neighboring Massachusetts is the invisible man so far." New York State voters give Clinton a 59 - 35 percent favorability rating, similar to her scores in recent Quinnipiac University polls of Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, potentially critical swing states in 2008. Favorability ratings for other contenders are: 56 - 30 percent for Giuliani; 48 - 24 percent for McCain; 44 - 9 percent for Obama, with 46 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion; 44 - 21 percent for Edwards, with 33 percent who haven't heard enough; 52 - 40 percent for Gore; 19 - 53 percent for Gingrich; 35 - 55 percent for Pataki; For Romney, 72 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. President Bush's Approval New York State voters disapprove 72 - 24 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Voters disapprove 75 - 20 percent of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq and oppose 72 - 24 percent the President's plan to send 22,000 more troops to Iraq. From February 6 -11 Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,049 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey includes 324 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 5.4 percent, and 485 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
