April 5, 2007 - Clinton, Giuliani Hold Big Leads In New York State, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Gore Catches Obama In Democratic Primary Race Sen. Hillary Clinton and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani are the pick of their parties in New York State where Sen. Clinton leads Mayor Giuliani 50 - 42 percent in the 2008 presidential campaign, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Sen. Clinton tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 55 - 34 percent. In other possible presidential matchups, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds: Giuliani ties Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 44 - 44 percent 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards tops Giuliani 47 - 43 percent; Clinton over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 61 - 26 percent; Obama beats McCain 47 - 36 percent; Edwards over McCain 52 - 34 percent; Obama beats Romney 53 - 23 percent; Edwards tops Romney 59 - 21 percent. Clinton leads the Democratic primary pack with 44 percent, followed by Obama and former Vice President Al Gore with 14 percent each and Edwards with 9 percent. "Sorry, Mayor Giuliani. New York is still a blue state. In other states polled by Quinnipiac University, Giuliani runs strong. But Sen. Clinton holds an 8-point lead over the former mayor among the home folks," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Giuliani makes a race of it against the other Democrats. Clinton swamps the other Republicans," Carroll added. Giuliani gets 52 percent of Republicans, followed by McCain with 13 percent, former Gov. George Pataki with 6 percent, Romney at 4 percent and 3 percent each for former Senator and actor Fred Thompson and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. "Even if New York moves its presidential primary to February 5, will any of the candidates even bother to campaign here against Giuliani and Clinton?" Carroll asked. "Two guys who have yet to throw their hats into the ring are creating a stir: Former Vice President Al Gore is tied with Sen. Obama among New York Democrats and Sen. Fred Thompson, who plays a Manhattan district attorney on Law & Order, is doing almost as well as multi-millionaire Mitt Romney." Clinton gets a 58 - 35 percent favorability rating and a 68 - 26 percent approval of the job she's doing as Senator. Favorability ratings for other contenders are: 55 - 35 percent for Giuliani; 47 - 23 percent for McCain; 48 - 12 percent for Obama; 58 - 14 percent for Edwards, up from 44 - 21 percent February 14; For Romney, 69 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion; For Thompson, 78 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. President Bush's Approval New York State voters disapprove 72 - 26 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Congress should set a timetable to bring all U.S. troops home from Iraq by the end of next year, voters say 61 - 35 percent, with support from 32 percent of Republicans. From March 28 - April 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,548 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percent. The survey includes 476 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent, and 680 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
