February 3, 2010 - Voters, Including Blacks, See No Race Problem For Cuomo, Quinnipiac University New York State Poll Finds; Gillibrand Tops Unknown Ford 2-1, But Many Undecided Word format New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's possible challenge of Gov. David Paterson in a Democratic primary will not be racially divisive, voters say 80 - 14 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Black voters say 73 - 22 percent that a Cuomo challenge won't be racially divisive. Cuomo leads Paterson 55 - 23 percent among Democrats, compared to 60 - 23 percent in a December 15 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Cuomo leads Paterson 66 - 15 percent among white Democrats, while Paterson leads 42 - 34 percent among black Democrats. But all blacks give Cuomo better scores on approval and favorability. New York State voters approve 71 - 15 percent of the job Cuomo is doing, compared to a negative 37 - 54 percent score for Paterson. Cuomo's approval has topped 70 percent in every Quinnipiac University survey for 12 months, except when it hit 68 percent in May. Paterson has had negative grades in every survey for nine months. By a 78 - 15 percent margin, voters say they are not impatient with Cuomo for delaying an announcement about his plans to run for Governor. This high level of patience is consistent among all political and racial groups and in every region of the state. "Does Hamlet-on-the-Hudson run in the family? Unlike the media, New Yorkers aren't impatient for Attorney General Cuomo to admit he's running for Governor," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "And unlike some black politicians, New Yorkers are not worried that a Cuomo primary against Paterson would be racially divisive. In the Democratic match-up - Cuomo v Paterson - the Attorney General continues his lop-sided lead. Plus, Cuomo's job approval is good and Paterson's isn't." Looking at black voter opinion: Cuomo gets a 78 - 12 percent approval rating to Paterson's 60 - 30 percent; Cuomo gets a 68 - 7 percent favorability rating to Paterson's 52 - 23 percent; Cuomo tops Republican Rick Lazio in a general election matchup for Governor 81 - 4 percent while Paterson tops Lazio 70 - 9 percent. Among all voters, Cuomo tops Lazio 57 - 25 percent while Paterson gets 39 percent to Lazio's 40 percent. Gillibrand-Ford Senate Race U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand leads possible challenger Harold Ford 36 - 18 percent in a Democratic primary, with 40 percent undecided. Sen. Gillibrand tops Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman 44 - 27 percent while Ford beats Blakeman 35 - 26 percent. New York State voters approve 42 - 28 percent of the job Gillibrand is doing, her highest score in her first year as Senator. She gets a 33 - 22 percent favorability, with 44 percent who haven't heard enough about her to form an opinion. The 'haven't heard enough' score for Ford is 70 percent, with Blakeman at 84 percent. "Right now, the Senate race matches the little-known Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand against largely unknown Harold Ford and almost totally unknown Bruce Blakeman," Carroll said. "The announced Republican challengers - Lazio for Governor and Blakeman for Senator - don't show much oomph at this stage. Are they the best the GOP has to offer?" President Obama, Sen. Schumer Approval New York State voters approve 57 - 38 percent of the job President Obama is doing, compared to 59 - 36 percent December 15. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer deserves to be reelected this year, voters say 54 - 33 percent. Voters approve 58 - 30 percent of the job he is doing, down from 62 - 27 percent in December. From January 27 - February 1, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,182 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points. The survey includes 921 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points and 142 black Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 8.2 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
