September 1, 2010 - Cuomo Tops Lazio Or Paladino More Than 2-1, Quinnipiac University New York State Poll Finds; Voters Want To Know How Cuomo Will Fix Budget Word format New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic candidate for Governor, leads either of his Republican rivals by more than 2-1, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Cuomo tops former Congressman Rick Lazio 57 - 25 percent and leads Carl Paladino 60 - 23 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Independent voters back Cuomo over Lazio 55 - 23 percent and support the Democrat over Paladino 54 - 24 percent. New York State voters approve 69 - 20 percent of the job Cuomo is doing as Attorney General and by 54 - 21 percent, they have a favorable opinion of him. Lazio gets a split 25 - 24 percent favorability and 49 percent of voters don't know enough about him to form an opinion. For Paladino, 70 percent don't know enough about him. Voters say 63 - 23 percent that Cuomo has not done enough to explain how he will fix New York State's budget problems. Even Democrats say 52 - 35 percent that Cuomo hasn't explained enough. Asked if Cuomo is deferring to Gov. David Paterson or "ducking his responsibility as a candidate," voters say 44 - 32 percent that he's ducking. "Is it fair to ask if Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, as the runaway favorite for Governor, has done enough to tell New Yorkers where he stands on issues? Voters think it is. Almost two- thirds of New Yorkers would like him to say more," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Is Cuomo's reticence to speak out simply polite deference to the sitting Governor, David Paterson, or is he ducking his responsibilities? Lots of New Yorkers agree with each of those arguments, but more say 'ducking,'" Carroll added. "Rick Lazio or Carl Paladino - take your pick. Cuomo trounces either of them." U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, the Democrat, dominates any of her three possible Republican challengers: 44 - 26 percent over Bruce Blakeman; 45 - 24 percent over David Malpass; 43 - 28 percent over Joseph DioGuardi. New York State voters approve 46 - 27 percent of the job Sen. Gillibrand is doing and give her a 38 - 21 percent favorability rating, with 39 percent who haven't heard enough about her to form an opinion. The "don't know enough" factor for each of the three Republicans ranges from 76 percent to 85 percent. "Who are those guys who want to run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand? In match-ups, each of the three gets the generic Republican vote. But most voters don't know much about any of them," Carroll said. Worst Score Ever for State Legislature New York State voters disapprove 75 - 15 percent of the job the State Legislature is doing, matching the 76 - 16 percent disapproval from a June 23 Quinnipiac University poll for the worst overall net score ever. Voters say 55 - 31 percent that their local state senator should be voted out of office as part of an overall house-cleaning in Albany, the highest anti-incumbent score ever. Their State Assembly member should go, too, voters say 53 - 33 percent, the highest anti- incumbent score for Assembly members as well. "State legislators ought to be nervous. More than half of voters say that, to clean house in Albany, they'd even vote against their own senator or Assembly member. That sort of mass movement never has happened - but the Legislature overall gets terrible marks, and New Yorkers, overall, are unhappy with the state of the state," Carroll said. From August 23 - 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,497 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
