May 31, 2012 - New Yorkers Back Cardinal, But Say Church Too Involved, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Catholics Follow Church On Some, But Not All, Issues Word format With a large Democratic-Republican split, New York State voters approve 38 - 25 percent, including 63 - 19 percent among Catholics, of the way New York Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan is leading Catholics in the state, according to a Quinnipiac University poll release today. Another 37 percent of all voters, including 18 percent of Catholics, are undecided. Approval for Cardinal Dolan is 59 - 11 percent among Republicans and 38 - 25 percent among independent voters, while Democrats disapprove by a narrow 33 - 27 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Men approve 41 - 24 percent while women approve 36 - 26 percent. Protestants approve 33 - 23 percent while Jews are divided with 21 percent approving and 26 percent disapproving. Catholic Church leaders are "too involved" in politics, 43 percent of New York State voters say, while 11 percent say "not involved enough" and 32 percent say Church involvement is "about right." Among Catholics, 43 percent say "about right," with 33 percent saying "too involved" and 17 percent saying "not involved enough." Voters disapprove 55 - 38 percent of lawsuits by Catholic institutions challenging the Obama Administration on the birth control insurance issue. Catholics approve of the Church lawsuits 51 - 45 percent. In the presidential matchup, President Barack Obama leads Gov. Mitt Romney, the Republican challenger, 56 - 31 percent in New York State. Catholic voters split 44 - 44 percent, while the president leads 55 - 31 percent among Protestants and 72 - 24 percent among Jews. "How times have changed. Once upon a time, Democrats and Catholics were one and the same. Now Democratic voters think the Catholic Church is too involved in New York politics and they give New York's assertive new cardinal low marks," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Overall, Timothy Cardinal Dolan has modest job-approval numbers," Carroll added. New York State voters approve 58 - 39 percent of the job President Obama is doing. Catholics disapprove 51 - 46 percent. Approval is 59 - 38 percent among Protestants and 70 - 27 percent among Jews. These voters are nuanced in their opinions of insurance coverage of birth control: Voters say 77 - 19 percent, including 69 - 27 percent among Catholics, that insurance plans should cover birth control as preventive care for women; Voters say 58 - 39 percent that the federal government should require private employers to offer free birth control as part of their health insurance benefit. Catholics are divided, with 48 percent in support and 50 percent opposed; Voters oppose 50 - 45 percent having the federal government require religious-affiliated employers to offer free birth control. Catholics are opposed 60 - 36 percent; Artificial birth control is not wrong, New York State voters say 83 - 10 percent, including 79 - 14 percent among Catholics. Voters support same-sex marriage 54 - 37 percent. Among Catholics, 48 percent support same-sex marriage while 44 percent are opposed. New York State voters approve 52 - 39 percent of Obama's handling of same-sex marriage, but Catholics disapprove 50 - 42 percent. "Should health insurance cover contraception? Overwhelmingly, New Yorkers, including Catholics, say yes. Should government require such coverage? The numbers are still positive, but they shrink," Carroll said. "Should religious institutions be required to provide that insurance? Narrowly, New Yorkers say no. On this one, Catholics back Church leaders. "New Yorkers don't like those Catholic lawsuits against the Obama Administration's insurance mandate, with Democrats leading the opposition and Catholics narrowly backing the Church. Is birth control okay? Of course, New Yorkers say. The numbers aren't even close." From May 22 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,504 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
