September 13, 2012 - Obama Tops Romney Almost 2-1 In New York, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Gillibrand Does Even Better In Senate Race Word format President Barack Obama buries Gov. Mitt Romney, his Republican challenger, 62 - 34 percent among New York State likely voters, with a 20-point lead among men and a 35-point lead among women, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is the first measure of likely voters by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University and can not be compared with earlier surveys of registered voters. In today's survey, President Obama leads 94 - 4 percent among Democrats and 58 - 37 percent among independent voters, while Republicans turn to Romney 89 - 10 percent. Obama has big leads among all income and age groups. White Catholics back Romney 56 - 42 percent while white Protestants back Obama by a narrow 51 - 47 percent. White men are split 48 - 48 percent while white women back the president 57 - 40 percent. "The only reason President Barack Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney will come to New York is to raise money. Unless something unforeseen happens, the poll numbers say it's an Obama blow-out," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Besides his usual close to unanimous vote in the Black community, Obama also carries the white vote in New York. Men like him a lot; women like him even more." President Obama gets a 61 - 36 percent favorability rating from New York State likely voters, compared to Romney's negative 34 - 52 percent rating. Vice President Joseph Biden gets a 51 - 34 percent favorability, while U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, gets a negative 27 - 45 percent score. New York State likely voters say 49 - 31 percent that Biden is qualified to be president. Ryan is not qualified to be president, voters say 35 - 30 percent, with 35 percent undecided. U.S. Senate Race In the first likely voter look at New York's U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand leads Republican challenger Wendy Long 64 - 27 percent. Republicans back long 71 - 23 percent, but Gillibrand takes every other group by wide margins. By a 54 - 16 percent margin, likely voters have a favorable opinion of Gillibrand. For Long, 74 percent don't know enough about her to form an opinion. "The significant number in the Senate race is how many voters don't know enough to decide whether they like or dislike Wendy Long," Carroll said. "Hardly anyone knew Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand when she was first appointed but it looks like an easy six more years. The economy is "extremely" important to their vote for president, 62 percent of voters say, followed by 54 percent who list health care as "extremely important" and 49 percent who cite Medicare. Obama will do a better job than Romney on each issue, voters say: 57 - 36 percent on the economy; 63 - 32 percent on health care; 61 - 32 percent on Medicare. "Issues? Just like everywhere else, New Yorkers list the economy first, then health care," Carroll said. "New York voters say the president will do a better job than the challenger on every issue." From September 4 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,486 New York State likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
