October 2, 2001 - New York Loves Giuliani, But Splits On Longer Term, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Governor's Lead Over Dems Soars New York State voters give Mayor Rudolph Giuliani a huge 90 -7 percent approval rating, but split 48 - 45 percent on whether state government should repeal term limits so he can run for another term as Mayor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. New York City voters oppose repealing term limits 55 - 39 percent, while upstate voters support repeal 52 - 40 percent and suburban voters support repeal 54 - 41 percent. Democrats are opposed 52 - 43 percent, while Republican voters support the repeal 58 - 34 percent and independent voters split 47 - 48 percent. Gov. George Pataki gets a 81 - 12 percent approval, while Sen. Charles Schumer gets a 69 - 11 percent approval and Sen. Hillary Clinton gets a 59 - 28 percent approval, the highest ratings any of them have received. From September 24 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,262 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent. The survey includes 526 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percent. "New Yorkers to Giuliani: Great job, Mr. Mayor. But they're split on whether to change the rules so the game can go into extra innings," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Elected officials - Gov. Pataki, President Bush, Sens. Schumer and Clinton and, most of all, Mayor Giuliani - all get good marks in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks," Carroll added. Governor's Race If the November, 2002, governor's race were held today, Pataki would top State Comptroller H. Carl McCall 59 - 26 percent, up from a 46 - 35 percent lead in a June 26 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University. The Republican incumbent would beat former U.S. Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo 60 - 25 percent, up from a 47 - 39 percent lead June 26. In a Democratic primary, Cuomo beats McCall 41 - 29 percent, compared to a 44 - 31 percent lead June 26. "Gov. Pataki, his performance in the aftermath of the terrorist attack impressing New Yorkers, soars dramatically against either of the Democrats who want his job," Carroll said. By a 65 - 10 percent margin, New York State voters have a favorable opinion of Pataki, with 20 percent mixed and 5 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings for other possible candidates are: Favorable Unfavorable Mixed No Opinion Cuomo 25% 14% 14% 46% McCall 27 3 9 60 President Bush's approval rating is 82 - 14 percent.
