July 1, 1999 - Bush-Gore Or Bush-Bradley, It's A Dead Heat In New York, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; New Yorkers Split On Total Handgun Ban Former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley runs just as well as Vice President Al Gore against either leading Republican contender, Texas Gov. George W. Bush or former Red Cross Director Elizabeth Dole among New York State voters, according to a Quinnipiac College poll released today. Bush gets 45 percent to Gore's 44 percent, a tie, and Bush gets 44 percent to Bradley's 43 percent. Gore beats Mrs. Dole 50 - 37 percent, while Bradley tops Dole 50 - 35 percent. But in a Democratic Primary, Gore tops Bradley, 52 - 34 percent. In a Republican Primary, Bush gets 56 percent, trailed by Dole with 13 percent. No other possible GOP contender tops 7 percent, the independent Quinnipiac College Poll finds. In a Bush-Gore race, men vote for Bush 52 - 36 percent, while women voters back Gore 49 - 40 percent. In a Bush-Bradley race, men and women split evenly for each candidate. "This latest poll comes on the heels of the New York Knicks valiant efforts in the NBA Championships, a fact which could have helped ex-Knick Bill Bradley, especially among men voters," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute. "While Vice President Gore looks like the clear winner in a Democratic Primary, he must be concerned that in reliably Democratic New York State, he can't muster better than a tie with Gov. Bush, a guy from Texas." By a 41 - 21 percent margin, New York voters have a favorable opinion of Bush, with 19 percent mixed and 18 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion. And the other GOPers are a bunch of no-names, except for Buchanan, Forbes and Quayle. To know them, it seems, is to dislike them," Carroll said. Gun Control New Yorkers say, 73 - 23 percent, it is more important to control guns than to protect the rights of gun-owners; 51 percent of gun owners say controlling guns is more important. New Yorkers split 48 - 49 percent whether there should be a total ban on handguns, except for law enforcement and the military. By a 78 - 19 percent margin, with 74 percent of gun owners in support, New York State voters say there should be a ban on assault weapons. New Yorkers also support a law requiring childproof trigger locks 89 - 9 percent, with 86 percent of gun owners in support of such a requirement. From June 22- 28, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,131 New York State registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent.
