February 6, 2009 - Obama's Stimulus Package Won't Help Me, Ohio Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Strong Support And Hope For New President Word format Ohio voters give President Barack Obama a 67 - 16 percent approval rating and support his Economic Stimulus Package 57 - 32 percent, but voters say 51 - 42 percent that the stimulus plan won't help them personally, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Democrats hope the stimulus plan helps them 59 - 33 percent. The stimulus plan won't help them, Republicans say 71 - 24 percent and independent voters say 57 - 36 percent. Men and women are about equally pessimistic. Voters 18 to 34 years old have a bright outlook, 60 - 33 percent, but pessimism sets in with age, with a 53 - 41 percent negative among voters 35 to 54 and a 58 - 33 percent negative among voters over 55 years old. Voters making less than $50, 000 per year split 46 - 44 percent while voters in higher income brackets go negative, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-e-ack) University poll finds. "The honeymoon between President Obama and Ohio voters is still going. Even though he's been in office only two weeks, President Obama's numbers are stratospheric. He even has a 52 - 29 percent approval rating among white evangelical Christians, a solid part of the Republican coalition," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "When a politician's approval rating among independent voters is 72 - 12 percent, he's riding the wave. When and if it crests only time will tell." Ohioans think Obama is doing a better job handling the economy, 58 - 21 percent, than popular Gov. Ted Strickland, 44 - 37 percent. "Given his short period on the job, this obviously reflects the general public infatuation with the new President as much as public approval of any specific part of his proposals," said Brown. Even Republicans, by a 39 - 23 percent margin, expect by the end of Obama's term that the economy will be better. "The President has the advantage of having to meet a relatively low bar, given the historic nature of the economic downturn, hence the belief even among his political opponents that things will improve on his watch," said Brown. "The key question for Obama is how well he will wear on the people of Ohio if the economy isn't much better at the end of his four years." Although Ohioans support Obama's stimulus package by almost two-to-one, they are not nearly as confident that it will pull the nation out of its economic downward spiral. Only 7 percent say they are "very confident" it will help solve the nation's economy problems and 45 percent say they are "somewhat confident," while 46 percent say they are "not too confident" or "not confident at all" that it would do so. The Economic Stimulus Package will take more than a year to work, 71 percent of Ohio voters say, while 22 percent say it will never work. Only 5 percent think it will work in less than a year. "In a political sense, the fact that a small plurality of independent voters - 49 percent - say they are not too confident or not at all confident the stimulus plan will work is a potential warning sign for the President, since his job approval among that group is so high," said Brown. From January 29 - February 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,127 Ohio voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research. 26.
