March 31, 2010 - Democrats On Top In Ohio Senate, Governor Races, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama Bounces Back From Big Negative To A Split Word format Democrats are having a mini-surge in Ohio as two possible candidates for the open U.S. Senate seat have come from behind to pass the Republican contender, and Gov. Ted Strickland remains ahead of Republican challenger John Kasich, 43 - 38 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. And President Barack Obama's job approval is up from a negative 44 - 52 percent February 23 to an almost even 47 - 48 percent today, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds. In the Senate race, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher leads Republican Rob Portman 41 - 37 percent, reversing a 40 - 37 percent Portman lead February 24. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner edges Portman 38 - 37 percent, reversing a 40 - 35 percent Republican lead. Although Ohioans remain opposed to President Obama's health care plan, the margin is down from a 55 - 36 percent disapproval in November to a 50 - 43 percent thumbs down today. But voters say 38 - 25 percent they are more likely to vote against their congressman if he or she voted for the Obama plan. "Perhaps it's the passage of the health care overhaul and the fact that people like being with a winner: There has been a small, but consistent movement toward Democratic candidates and causes in Ohio in the last month," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Whether this is the beginning of a long-term move or not won't be clear for some time, perhaps until November." Strickland's reelection lead matches his 44 - 39 percent lead February 23. The Governor's 49 - 40 percent job approval and his 46 - 35 percent favorability rating both are statistically the same as his scores in February. There is no gender gap in the Governor's race with 44 percent of men and 42 percent of women backing Strickland. "The good news for the Governor is that he remains ahead. The bad news is there is a long way to go until November and on virtually all measures he receives below 50 percent support and with no movement - typically worrisome signs for an incumbent," said Brown. President Obama's jump in approval is driven at least partly by a shift among independent voters, who move from a negative 38 - 57 percent in February to a negative 40 - 54 percent today, from minus 19 points to minus 14 points. He gets exceptionally strong 84 percent support among Democrats. Women give him a thumbs up 51 - 45 percent while men disapprove 53 - 43 percent. Obama is a better President than George W. Bush, voters say 45 - 32 percent. Even independents, who have been a particular political problem for Obama in recent months, say he has been better than Bush 35 - 31 percent. "So much for absence makes the heart grow fonder, or the grass is always greener," said Brown, "although Ohio voters say 46 - 44 percent they don't want the state's next U.S. Senator to generally support Obama's policies." Fisher has a narrow 33 - 26 percent lead in the May 4 primary, Quinnipiac University reported Tuesday in a survey of likely Democratic primary voters, a separate group from those polled for today's survey. "Undecided voters, 17 percent in the Governor's race and 21 to 23 percent in the two possible Senate matchups, will decide both those races in November," said Brown. Sen. George Voinovich, who is not seeking re-election, has a 46 - 36 percent approval rating while Sen. Sherrod Brown gets a 45 - 30 percent score. From March 23 - 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,526 registered Ohio voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research.
