April 29, 2010 - Ohio Senate, Governor Races Remain Tight, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama Still Under Water Word format Democrats have small leads for governor and U.S. Senator in Ohio, while President Barack Obama's job approval remains stuck in the mid 40s, and the new health care legislation is decidedly unpopular, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Gov. Ted Strickland leads Republican John Kasich 44 - 38 percent, statistically unchanged from the 43 - 38 percent lead he held in the March 31 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher gets 40 percent to Republican Rob Portman's 37 percent while Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner edges Portman 40 - 36 percent. Fisher and Brunner meet May 4 in a primary to determine who will face Portman in November. President Obama's job approval is underwater in Ohio, considered by many to be the nation's bellwether state, with 45 percent approving of his job performance and 50 percent disapproving. That's compared to 47 percent approve, 48 percent disappove March 31. Ohio voters disapprove 38 - 55 percent of the health care overhaul Obama signed into law last month. But these voters say 44 - 40 percent that Obama, rather than congressional Republicans, does a better job handling health care. "Ohio is upholding its reputation as a battleground state. Democrats seem to have a slight edge in the key races, but those leads are small and have gone back and forth in recent months. As has historically been the key in Ohio elections, the undecided vote - many of whom are independents - could well hold the balance of power come November," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. " "Although Gov. Ted Strickland remains ahead, there are a couple of numbers that might be of some concern to his re-election committee," Brown added. "Only 37 percent of voters say he has kept his campaign promises and the race remains close even though 62 percent of voters don't know enough about Kasich to have an opinion of him. "The Senate numbers reflect the same level of voter unfamiliarity with the candidates, which means that race has a long, long way to go once the Democratic nomination is settled." Obama's approval rating reflects continued disillusionment with him among independents, who disapprove of his job performance 55 - 38 percent, while Democrats approve 82 - 15 percent and Republicans disapprove 85 - 12 percent. Obama's approval rating in Ohio has been 45 percent plus or minus two percent since November. "The President's approval has remained in the mid-40s percentage range for six months. His numbers aren't great, but they are not awful either. It's worth remembering that George W. Bush won re-election in 2004 with those kinds of numbers," Brown said. Both of Ohio's U.S. senators have positive job approval ratings. Democrat Sherrod Brown has a 45 - 31 percent score, and Republican George Voinovich, who is retiring and whose seat is up for grabs this November, gets a 47 - 35 percent score. From April 21 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,568 registered Ohio voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research.
