January 18, 2012 - Romney Takes The Lead In GOP Presidential Pack In Ohio, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama Approval Still Sags As He Ties Romney Word format A nine-point jump combined with the collapse of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gives former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the lead over the Republican field in the race for Ohio's Republican presidential primary, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. In the general election, Romney has 42 percent to President Barack Obama's 44 percent in the race for the state's crucial Electoral College votes. Ohio voters give President Obama 51 - 44 percent thumbs down on his job performance and say 51 - 45 percent he does not deserve a second term in the Oval Office, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Romney leads in the Republican presidential primary with 27 percent, followed by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum with 18 percent, Gingrich with 17 percent, down from 36 percent December 8, Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul with 10 percent and Texas Gov. Rick Perry with 4 percent. "Gov. Mitt Romney is comfortably ahead of the Republican field," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "If he continues to win primaries elsewhere, that margin will likely increase by the time the voting comes to Ohio on March 6. But if he should lose his momentum - and some primaries - then that lead might not be safe." The last time Quinnipiac University surveyed Ohio Republicans on December 8, Gingrich held a 36 - 18 percent lead over Romney with Paul at 7 percent, Perry at 4 percent and Santorum at 2 percent. Among Republicans, 43 percent say Gingrich is the best qualified when it comes to foreign affairs, with Romney second at 16 percent. Gingrich has the right kind of knowledge and experience to be president, 38 percent of Republicans say, as 25 percent point to Romney. Romney is best able to handle the economy, 36 percent of Republicans say, with 19 percent for Gingrich. Romney is a strong leader, 32 percent say, with 31 percent for Gingrich. "GOP voters think highly of Gingrich, but are much less likely to back his candidacy," said Brown. The Obama - Romney virtual tie in the general election is in line with previous Quinnipiac University polls. In five surveys since July, the two men have swapped the lead back and forth with four points being the largest margin between them. In today's survey, Obama holds leads of 48 - 37 percent over Santorum, 48 - 39 percent over Paul and 52 - 38 percent over Gingrich. Romney beats Obama 89 - 5 percent among Republicans and the two men tie among independent voters 39 - 40 percent. The president carries Democrats 87 - 7 percent. Romney gets 45 percent of men to Obama's 42 percent. Women back Obama 47 - 38 percent. "With Ohio being perhaps the most important single state in the country when it comes to the Electoral College math, all indications are that if Romney is the Republican nominee it will be a very, very close contest," said Brown. "The president's problem is getting back the voters who voted for him in 2008 but went for John Kasich for governor in 2010. His main obstacle may be that voters say 48 - 42 percent that Romney is better able to fix the economy." The biggest problems demographically for the president are among white voters, where only 38 percent say he deserves re-election. Ohio voters don't have a very good opinion of any of the candidates, giving Romney a split 36 - 34 percent favorability. Scores for other candidates are: Obama: 48 - 47 percent; Santorum: 25 - 25 percent; Paul: Negative 28 - 33 percent; Gingrich: Negative 26 - 51 percent. From January 9 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,610 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Republican primary includes 542 voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
