June 26, 2013 - Obama Hits Lowest Point Ever In Ohio, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Clinton-Christie Dead Even In Critical Swing State PDF format President Barack Obama's job approval in Ohio is a negative 40 - 57 percent, his lowest grade ever in the state and nearly matching a 39 - 57 percent low in Florida in September, 2011, his lowest grade ever in any of the nine states surveyed by Quinnipiac University, according to a poll released today. Ohio independent voters continue to move away from President Obama and now give him a 30-point negative rating, 34 - 64 percent. If the 2016 presidential election were today, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie are deadlocked 42 - 42 percent in the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey of this critical swing state. Ms. Clinton gets 47 percent to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's 44 percent. Both potential GOP candidates top Vice President Joseph Biden, Christie by 50 - 32 percent and Paul by 49 - 40 percent. "Ohio was the key state in both of President Barack Obama's elections and it was his strong showing among independent voters there that made the difference," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "President Obama's fortunes in the Buckeye State have turned. Since last December he has lost 10 points among Democrats and 17 points among independent voters. He has gone from a 20-point approval margin among women to a 9-point disapproval margin among female voters." Democrats approve of the president's job performance 82 - 14 percent, while Republicans disapprove 91 - 9 percent. Even women disapprove 53 - 44 percent, while men disapprove 61 - 37 percent. That compares to last December when he had a 92 - 7 percent approval among Democrats and 51 - 43 percent among independent voters while getting an 85 - 12 disapproval among Republicans. Then, he had a 50 - 46 percent approval among men and 58 - 38 among women. It is Ms. Clinton's strength among women and ability to keep her Democratic base when matched against Gov. Christie that keeps her in the presidential hunt. Clinton leads among women 47 - 36 percent and among Democrats 86 - 6 percent, which allows her to counter Christie's narrower 80 - 8 percent margin among his GOP base and 48 - 37 percent lead among men. Independent voters are divided with 41 percent for Christie and 38 percent for Clinton. Against Biden, Christie wins independent voters 53 - 25 percent, along with Republicans 85 - 4 percent, while losing Democrats 70 - 15 percent. Christie carries men 52 - 29 percent and women 48 - 34 percent. Gun Control A total of 78 percent of Ohio voters, including 70 percent of voters in households with guns, say they "somewhat" or "strongly" support a law requiring background checks for people buying guns at gun shows and online. Voters say 45 - 15 percent that Sen. Rob Portman's vote against that measure makes them think less favorably about Portman, while 38 percent say is doesn't make a difference. Sen. Sherrod Brown's vote for background checks makes them view him more favorably, voters say 43 - 16 percent, while 40 percent say it makes no difference. Portman's overall job approval rating, however, is 44 - 26 percent, compared to 40 - 31 percent in April before the gun vote. Brown has a 46 - 38 percent approval rating, compared to 47 - 38 percent in April. On another issue, voters are split 46 - 47 percent on whether the state should expand its Medicaid program to cover more people or not as part of the federal health care overhaul. From June 18 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 941 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
