June 17, 2011 - Phillies Scuttle Pirates In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds Word format Pennsylvania baseball fans prefer the Philadelphia Phillies over the Pittsburgh Pirates 51 - 22 percent in the Quinnipiac University poll's first ever Pennsylvania Pennant Race. There are actually 8 percent of Pennsylvania baseball fans who like the New York Yankees and 3 percent who like the Mets, with other teams getting one or two percent, according to the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll, conducted among the 51 percent of adults who are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball. The Pirates rule in Allegheny County 76 - 1 percent, with 8 percent for the St. Louis Cardinals and 5 percent for the Yankees. The Phillies own Philly with 89 percent, followed by the Yankees at 2 percent. The Pirates are shut out in Philadelphia. Central Pennsylvania goes to the Phillies over the Pirates 50 - 13 percent. "The Phillies are playing .600 ball, compared to the Pirates' .500, and Pennsylvania fans are lined up with the winner," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "But the Pirates have won more of the 2,000 regular season games they've played against the Phillies since 1887." From June 7 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,420 Pennsylvania adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
