June 6, 2013 - Pennsylvania Voters Say NCAA Hurt Penn State Football, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Support For Gun Background Checks Remains Strong PDF format National Collegiate Athletic Association sanctions against Penn State football hurt the program "a great deal," 42 percent of Pennsylvania voters say, while 33 percent say sanctions hurt "somewhat," according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The sanctions are "too severe," 46 percent of voters say, while 32 percent say they are appropriate, compared to the findings of a January 29 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, in which 53 percent said the sanctions are "too severe" and 28 percent said "appropriate." When he was State Attorney General, Gov. Tom Corbett did not do enough to investigate the Jerry Sandusky scandal, voters say 58 - 23 percent, with no group saying he did enough. A total of 47 percent of Pennsylvania voters say the Penn State situation will be "very important" or "somewhat important" in their vote for governor next year, while 48 percent say it will not be important. With the passage of time, voter opinion of the late Joe Paterno is improving slightly: Voters have a 47 - 27 percent favorable opinion of the late Penn State coach, compared to 43 - 29 percent favorable January 29. "Despite a better-than-predicted record in the first post-Paterno season, all voters, even Penn State Football fans, are still steamed with the NCAA for the harsh sanctions imposed on the legendary program," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Pennsylvanians think Gov. Tom Corbett fumbled the Sandusky probe. "It's a penalty flag for the governor. Facing a blitz of solid Democratic defenders, he is going to have a hard time moving downfield." Support for gun-control remains strong in Pennsylvania, where 67 percent of voters, including 55 percent of voters in households where there is a gun, "strongly support" a law requiring background checks on people buying guns at gun shows or online. Another 17 percent support such a law "somewhat." A total of 88 percent of women support such a measure "strongly" or "somewhat," compared to 77 percent of men. Every partisan, racial, regional, income and educational group strongly supports broader background checks. "They may be divided by race, region or income bracket, but Pennsylvanians want better background checks. A broad spectrum of voters says we need to know more about people buying guns," Malloy said. Because of his co-sponsorship of legislation for more background checks, 54 percent of Pennsylvania voters, including 47 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Democrats, think more favorably of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey. Voters approve 46 - 29 percent of the job Sen. Toomey is doing and give U.S. Sen. Robert Casey Jr. a 45 - 29 percent approval rating. In an early look at the 2016 U.S. Senate race, Toomey leads former U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak 42 - 37 percent. By a small 49 - 44 percent margin, Pennsylvania voters support expanding Medicaid to enroll more people. Republicans oppose expansion 73 - 18 percent, while Democrats support it 78 - 17 percent, with independent voters divided 46 - 46 percent. Women support expanded Medicaid 52 - 41 percent while men are divided, with 47 percent for keeping Medicaid as is and 45 percent for expansion. A total of 96 percent of voters say health care will be "very important" or "somewhat important" to their vote for governor next year. Voter attitudes on other issues are: 96 percent say government spending will be very or somewhat important; 96 percent say jobs will be important; 94 percent say taxes; 93 percent cite schools; 70 percent say abortion. The federal government will initially pay the entire cost of this expansion, and after several years, states will pay 10% and the federal government will pay 90%.
